Ouch A devastating critique. Your work on Nigeria is world class and will hopefully be taught in Nigerian schools as a cautionary tale.

Interesting. Seems like Shagari was Buhari 1.0.

So, it was all doom and gloom? No bright spots for the Shagari government? No coherent economic policy? Just a kakistocracy?

I wasn't all doom and gloom. As I said, 1979 &1980 because oil prices were high. If you were a political insider, a contractor working on making Abuja, or an urban middle classer it was alright. It was only starting to get bad mid 1981 and became terrible in 1982 and 1983.

Like I said, there was a lot going on. I will continue more on the 2nd Republic next time. There were some successes. Like Shagari's green revolution had some successes increase maize and black eye peas for politically connected big farmers. But overall, it was pretty awful. Many Nigerians were happy when Buhari ended democracy in 1983, and yes, you'll see more terrible stuff next time.
